Top Cow, a leading publisher for comics, will return the Tomb Raider Comic franchise back in stores in the Third Quarter 2007, according to Top Cow President and Chief Operating Officer Matt Hawkins in an interview with Wizard Universe.
“The team from the Tomb Raider book wbere Ron Marz and Mike Choi and is being reunited on the new Tomb Raider launch book, which is probably going to happen in the third quarter of 2007.” explained Matt Hawkins.
Mike Choi is very excited in being able to tackle another of the company’s marquee women. “Other than Witchblade, the only Top Cow property I’ve worked on is Tomb Raider [Tomb Raider #45], and that was only for an issue, so it’ll be good to get another shot at her,” he explained. “More than being excited about working on the title, which I am, I’m really happy that Top Cow has the confidence in me to let me help rejuvenate another one of their core titles.”
And while the new Tomb Raider monthly is still nearly 6 months in the offing, the creative team already has its plans in motion.
“Ron is letting me help offer some ideas in the planning stages on locations and adventure concepts, so I’m really excited to be able to help the property get back to the original concept of tomb raiding,” said Choi. “This is an adventure book, and reading the book should be an experience similar to playing the game or watching an action-adventure movie. Lara Croft lives in a world where one minute she could be fighting dinosaurs, and the next fleeing from an army of soldiers protecting an ancient magical artifact, and we’re hopefully going to try and get back to that.”
And as for how the artist will apply his signature style to the archeologist adventurer, Choi won’t be relying on pinup shots alone to excite fans about the project. “The last time I drew her. I think I concentrated too much on her physical attributes, when in the end, Lara Croft is all about attitude,” said Choi. “Hopefully, a reader will be able to tell that it’s Lara even when she’s naked with her hair down.”
